England who topped their group knew that their destiny was in their own hands but labored for long spells before Kane inevitably produced the winning goal. His stoppage time winner was his 14th goal in his last nine matches for club and country as his excellent form continued.

Scotland’s win earlier in the night meant that a draw at Wembley would have sent England through. However, England have developed somewhat of a habit of scoring late in games and that trend continued at Wembley and capped off their home qualifiers nicely.

This result means that the Three Lions are six points clear of second place Scotland and have qualified with a game to spare. This may prove fruitful for Gareth Southgate as he now has the opportunity to experiment with different players when England face Lithuania.
