Manchester United and Watford played out what turned out to be a thriller at Vicarage Road. United are attempting to keep pace with their neighbours Manchester City.

Ashley Young, returning to his old stomping ground looked determined to make an impact and he certainly did that.

On the 19th minute, Lingard played the ball out the left wing, the ball ricocheted inside and Young unleashed an unstoppable strike that flew past Heurelho Gomes at his near post.

United didn’t have to wait long for the second and again, it was Young with the wonder strike. United won a free kick about 2 yards out and Young stood over it with absolute confidence, he proceeded to strike the ball with a whip that Gomes could only hope of saving.

United seemingly put the game to bed in the 31st minute as Romelu Lukaku released Anthony Martial down the middle and he finished confidently for his 8th goal of the season and put United 3 nil up at half time.

The tide of the game changed when Marcos Rojo gave away a cheap penalty on the 71st minute which Troy Deeney calmly converted for the fourth time against United and the Hornets had their tails up.

Watford got their second on the 84th minute through Abdoulaye Doucoure but that’s where their hope ended. United put the nail in the coffin through a brilliant individual goal from Jesse Lingard.

A Watford cross was cleared to Lingard who picked the ball up in his own half, he proceeded to glide past four Watford defenders and slotted the ball past Gomes to give United the much needed win.

Mourinho said: “It was an easy match to win comfortably. We should have been smoking cigars but then we were in trouble.

“Out of nothing Watford got a penalty which gave them belief, and teams in mid-table can play with quality and no pressure. They had nothing to lose.

“At 3-2 the game is in the balance, then Jesse had the initiative to kill the game.

“I prefer to forget about the five minutes where we lost concentration and focus on the many good things we did – so much in control, really dangerous in attacking situations to play away from home and score four goals where we could possibly have had seven or eight.
