Ferdinand, 38, is launching a boxing career with the help of Betfair, who are funding his 'Defender to Contender' challenge.

He has enlisted the help of fitness instructor Mel Deane, once of Harlequins and then Sale Sharks.

Ferdinand, who also played for West Ham, Leeds and QPR during his stellar football career, shared a video of himself and Deane working together on Wednesday morning.

Deane wore boxing gloves as he jabbed into the abs of Ferdinand, who was hanging onto a large piece of gym apparatus.

In between rounds of punches, Ferdinand demonstrated his strength as he pulled his legs up above his head.

Ferdinand shared the footage with his 2.4million Instagram followers, writing the caption: 'And we begin..... Mel Deane providing the rib shots this morning!!'

Fellow former England defender Viv Anderson, however, said Ferdinand's move into boxing was understandable.

Writing for Sportsmail, Anderson said: 'I see some people are saying Ferdinand is moving into boxing for the money, with a bookmaker ready to pay him £250,000 to take the risk. Well, I would say that's a very short-sighted view indeed.

'Ferdinand has money, media work and a fashion label but nothing in the world compares with the sensation of being out there, in the arena, making the decisions and living with the consequences.

In our own way, we're all looking to preserve that sensation for as long as we can.'
