IN what could have been easily the man of the match performance from Manchester United goalkeeper David DeGea, the match between Manchester United and Arsenal didn’t disappoint. The United keeper pulled out a host of one on one saves that helped United overturn their Emirates bad luck and defeat Arsenal 3 - 1.
United have not beaten Arsenal at the Emirates since departure of Alex Ferguson, and have had in what could be described as a run of bad luck at the ground.
United orchestrated a patented snatch-and-grab to escape the Emirates with all three points courtesy of a double from Jesse Lingard who was named man of the match and an Antonio Valencia strike.
United off to the perfect start inside 10 minutes putting Two goals past the home team. A Laurent Koscielny mistake lead to some intricate play between Pogba and Valencia that lead to the Ecuadorian firing the strike between the legs of Petr Cech. Another defensive lapse from Shkodran Mustafi gifted possession to Romelu Lukaku who threaded a lovely ball into Anthony Martial who flicked inside to Lingard who finished off the post.
Alexandre Lacazette brought Arsenal back into the game in the 48th minute finishing off a flowing move but Lingard restored United’s two goal lead in the 63rd minute after Pogba had completely bodied Koscielny off the ball and squared to the Englishman for the simple tap in. Pogba was sent off late in the second half but Arsenal failed to break down a 10 man United team thanks to a string of world class saves from David De Gea.
After the game, Wenger bemoaned the lack of defensive discipline early on but was upbeat about the performance of his team. In his post match interview Wenger said “At the back we didn’t start well at all, we put ourselves in a very difficult position. When you have 33 shots on goal in a game of that stature, it means our dominance was top class, the quality of our performance was outstanding.”
Mourinho on the other hand praised his team for their performance and appeared to take a vein swipe at the theatrics of the Arsenal players. He said “I thought our performance was fantastic today.”
When asked about the Pogba red card, Mourinho said “I leave for you the Lukaku situation with Koscielny, I leave for you the Arsenal players on the grass. The grass is absolutely beautiful – I think there is a desire to go onto the grass.”
The win pulls United within five points of Manchester City ahead of their game against West Ham while the defeat for the Gunners left them outside of the Champions League places and seven points behind United.
