World-leading performances by Elaine Thompson and Kendra Harrison at their National Trials

A round-up of the latest action at the Jamaican and US Championships in Kingston and Sacramento

Double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson was among the winners at the Jamaican Championships and world trials in Kingston on Friday, while Kendra Harrison was another with a world-leading performance over at the US Championships in Sacramento.

Thompson clocked the quickest 100m time in the world so far this year with 10.71 to secure her second national title over the distance.

In the men’s race, 2011 world champion Yohan Blake retained his title with 9.90 ahead of Julian Forte’s 10.04. Forte had earlier gone sub-10 seconds for the first time with a 9.99 PB in his semi-final.

The US men’s 100m title was claimed by Justin Gatlin as he clocked 9.95 to beat world-leader Christian Coleman with 9.98.

Tori Bowie won the women’s 100m in 10.94, while Paul Chelimo broke the 5000m meeting record with 13:08.62.

Will Claye impressed with his triple jump series, leaping a best of 17.91m to move to ninth on the world all-time list.

Two-time world decathlon champion Trey Hardee won his fourth US title with 8225 points, this win coming eight years after his first.

In her first race since her hand injury in Doha in May, Harrison clocked 12.54 into a -1.4m/s wind for the fastest time in the world so far this year to win her 100m hurdles heat.

There was a world record-breaking performance in the men’s 400m semi-finals as Paralympian Blake Leeper improved on Oscar Pistorius’ T43 record of 45.39 from 2011, with the American blade runner clocking 45.25. Pistorius has run quicker than that official world record, however, with his personal best being 45.07.
