Elaine Thompson will not attempt the double at the London 2017

Jamaica’s Olympic 100m and 200m sprint champion Elaine Thompson will not attempt the double at the London World Championships after she was entered for only the 100m at the National Senior Championships which begins today inside the National Stadium.

Thompson, who has an automatic spot in London based on being the IAAF Diamond League 100m champion, will indeed compete in the 100m at the four-day Senior Championships which serves as a trial to gain selection to the IAAF London World Championships August 4-13, and the CAC Senior Championships in Colombia July 14-16.

Thompson was second in the 200m at the 2015 edition in Beijing in a splendid 21.66secs and after conquering the rare sprint double at the Rio Olympics last year, it was believed she would try to repeat the double of compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 2013.

Dr Warren Blake, president of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), told the Jamaica Observer that the choice was Thompson’s.

“That’s the choice of Thompson and her handlers. We had a similiar situation year before last when Shelly only contested the 100 and not the 200,” noted Dr Blake.

“If she doesn’t enter for the event we can’t select her for the event,” he added.

But the quest for spots on Jamaica’s senior and junior teams starts today in an amalgamated championships set to last four days in what is expected to be intriguing action inside the National Stadium.
