British sprinter Zharnel Hughes was being held up at gunpoint in an attempted robbery in Jamaica on Tuesday Night during training at the University of the West Indies Usain Bolt Track in Mona.
The 22-year-old Great Britain athlete, who competed at the World Championships in 2017, told the Jamaica Gleaner. “I was putting on my sneakers at my trunk and this guy just came up pointing a gun in my face, he asked me for my phone and I ran off and the guy opened fire.”

Reports claim that a licensed firearm holder was at the scene and returned fire and no one was injured.
Hughes himself is said to be slightly shook up and claimed to report the matter to the police.
Hughes later took to Twitter saying: “Lost for words, but thankfully I’m okay. Today would be a day I definitely won’t forget. #ThankYouGod”
