Rupp becomes first American man to win Chicago Marathon in 15 years

United States Galen Rupp was the surprise winner at the 40th edition of the Chicago Marathon that was held on Sunday (8) in Chicago,Illinois.

Rupp had earlier said he wanted to end the longest U.S. victory drought in Chicago Marathon history thrashed the defending champion Abel Kirui of Kenya when he cut the tape in 2:09.20 setting a personal best and was followed by Kirui in 2:09.48.

The 31 year-old is coached by three-time New York City Marathon champion Alberto Salazar who already put a stamp on U.S. road racing this year.

“To have a race like this where it all comes together, and to win in a city that means so much to me… it’s just a great day,” Rupp said.

The Chicago Marathon was Rupp’s fourth marathon attempt, though his career trajectory so far has started off with a bang. He won Olympic Trials in 2016 and then picked up a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics. He also spent time in between training for track events. His third attempt was in April in Boston.

Bernard Kipyego took third place with 2:10.23 with Ethiopia’s Sisay Lemma taking fourth place in 2:11.44.

Stephen Sambu and Ezekiel Chebii took fifth and seventh in 2:12.07 and 2:13.12
