Could Anthony Joshua be taking his eye of Carlos Takam with all these talks about Deontay Wilder?
Anthony Joshua has a IBF title defence coming up against Carlos Takam, but all the talk in recent weeks seems to be about the potential heavyweight unification fight between himself and WBC Champion Deontay Wilder.
For the past few weeks Joshua and Wilder have been involved in a Twitter spat with Wilder posting his latest video responding to Joshua’s tweets.
“He’s basically talking about getting me old,” Wilder ranted.
“Don’t you know this black don’t crack? I ain’t gettin’ old no time soon, trust me.
“I keep telling you guys, I am the most feared heavyweight in the division.
“Eddie Hearn keeps saying he [Joshua] is gonna knock me out in three? Then make the motherf****** fight then.”

Joshua replied to Wilder via Twitter saying, “Of course we want to fight you, Deontay, you’re the champion. You’re the hunted. He just needs to start thinking that way and stop feeling sorry for himself, just keep quiet and don’t show any weakness in this game. This is heavyweight boxing.”
The inevitable unification showdown with Wilder is heading in Joshua’s direction, and with Wilder calling his name at given every opportunity, its capturing the imagination of the pubic and is now becoming one of the fight they all want to see.
With Joshua stating that he will like to fight in Las Vegas, this may be the perfect fight for his USA debut. If he wins to unifiy the belts then it will be no better way to win over the hearts of the most difficult boxing fans to please.
Joshua told international journalist over a conference call organised by Showtime, “There’s two things that I’m focusing on. One is that Takam is just like another fight and the second is winning. Then we can all move on to see what 2018 holds.”
Speaking on Deontay Wilder he says, “He’s what the division needs and I think this is what Wilder needs, so we’ll give it to them,” said Joshua. “I say it’s definitely a potential for 2018. What else am I going to do in 2018 provided that I don’t have any mandatories? I’ll be a free agent. If dealt with right with Eddie Hearn and the US, I think it could be built to be something just like the Klitschko fight. It should be better.
“I’m excited. I’m very excited. I would love to fight the great champions that the United States has produced. At the same time, I’ll fight anywhere. I’m fine staying in the UK, but America’s definitely at the top of the pyramid. Before I wanted to go out there for the experience. Now I want to go out there and make me some money.”
In order for these two Juggernauts to fight, Wilder has to first get through a tricky rematch with Bermane Stiverne next month, then Joshua’s promotor, Eddie Hearn wants Wilder to face one of Joshua’s scalps Dillian Whyte before they meet late in 2018.
