Top 10 tips for new runners and beginners
Taking up running as a new hobby is a great way to stay fit and keep a clear mind, however, it can be a fairly daunting to jump into.
We have compiled some of the top tips for new novice runners:
1. Invest in the right pair of running shoe
You want something that is going to offer you plenty of support during your run, that feels comfortable, and certainly does not rub and cause blisters.
2. Start slow
Don’t attempt too much too soon. Ease yourself into the process to build up some endurance and to avoid injury/burn out.
3. Distance over time
If you can, aim towards a set distance and keep building on that, rather than running for a set period of time. Slow it down and do not worry about the pace to start with.
4. Rest days are needed
You need to let your body recover with the odd rest day, otherwise injuries and fatigue will creep up on you fast.
5. Join a group or find a buddy
Running with someone else is not only more social, but it can also give you that extra push needed to test your limits.
6. Make it a regular habit
Go out running most days, even if it’s just for a few minutes. This builds up the habit and makes it a part of your daily routine.
7. Build your mileage slowly
Once you get a feel for it, build the distance up gradually. Gradual progress is far less strenuous on your body and makes progress feel far more effortless.
8. Walking breaks
Taking regular walking breaks during your run can actually build strength and endurance.
9. Keep a log
Keep a track of your progress.
10. Goals
Let yourself tasks and goals in your log in order to push your body to new heights.
